Pokémon is a franchise that has always been marketed for kids, as a way to teach them friendship and teamwork. You might assume from watching Pikachu and Ash palling around on the show that all Pokémon are cute and cuddly and harmless. However, not all Pokémon are friendly, happy souls. Much like real-life animals, the Pokémon world has creatures that are dangerous and even deadly for humans to encounter.

Here are 10 Pokémon that you can find in your Pokédex that you should think twice about approaching. I ran a poll a while back to rank them when this article was on LevelSkip, and these are the results from 1500 responses. Let’s see if you agree!

10. Lampent

The Litwick line has a haunting origin, being based on will o’ the wisps, eerie lights that appear to travelers who are lost and lead them to their deaths. Lampent is known as the emissary of death, appearing before people who are about to die and waiting to suck out their souls. It particularly enjoys waiting around hospitals, pretending to be a lamp, or pretending to be a streetlight and following its victims home. With each soul a Lampent consumes, its light burns brighter.

*Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained.*

9. Palossand

This sandcastle hides a sinister secret: the bones of its victims lie buried beneath it after it has drained the life out of them. Palossand is a clever predator who possesses children and forces them to build its body into a sandcastle, and it pulls small Pokémon that wander near it inside. Each grain of its sand has its own mind, but together they have one desire: to eat souls. Its only weakness is water, but that will not stop it for long.

8. Drowzee

Just looking at this bizarre anteater gives some players the creeps. Drowzee is an eater of dreams, and it prefers the sweet dreams of children the most. It is also skilled at hypnotism, forcing its prey to sleep so it can feed. If your nose tickles in your sleep, wake up. It could be a Drowzee feeding on you. How did it even get into your house? That is Drowzee’s secret.

7. Yamask

Yamask is not inherently hostile, but its very existence implies something horrifying. You see, every Yamask used to be a human, with human memories and a human soul. It carries around a mask of its human face, but it cannot speak. It often stares at its mask and cries out of longing for what it used to have. If somebody tries to wear its mask, however, the Yamask can possess them and steal their body. It is unknown how people get turned into Yamasks and it is impossible to change them back. Also, once they evolve, they lose their masks and their humanity entirely.

*The soul of a woman lost on a snowy mountain possessed an icicle, becoming this Pokemon. The food it most relishes is the souls of men.*

6. Froslass

Froslass is based on a monster from Japanese folklore called the Yuki no Onna. It is said to be the spirit of a woman who died lost in the mountains and regrets never finding love. Being the object of a Froslass’s affection is a death sentence. It will freeze people and Pokémon that it likes and take them back to its lair, where they will be displayed for all eternity, frozen with fear. On particularly snowy nights, it comes into villages and knocks on the door, hoping that someone will answer. Do not open the door.

*Packs of them follow travelers through the desert until the travelers can no longer move.*

5. Cacturne

You have been lost in the desert for many days. In every direction, there are miles of sand. And cactuses. At night, sometimes you think you see eyes peering at you in the darkness. Waiting. Hungry. You are tired and thirsty, and with every hour that passes you grow weaker. The eyes are closer every night until you are surrounded by cactuses one night. You are screaming until their sharp thorns pierce your throat, and after that, you hear no more.

*The bug host is drained of energy by the mushroom on its back. The mushroom does all of the thinking.*

4. Parasect

You may have noticed that Paras has some small mushrooms on its back. These mushrooms are actually a parasite trying to take over its body. When Paras evolves into Parasect, the mushroom takes over the bug’s body and mind completely. The mushroom forces the Pokémon to infest entire forests with its spores and drain the life out of all the trees, leaving dry, empty husks. Your beloved bug Pokémon is now mostly dead and drained of energy, and if the mushroom is removed the bug can no longer survive. Essentially, you’ve forced your Pokémon to become a mindless killing machine by making it evolve. Oops.

3. Gengar

An iconic ghost Pokémon, Gengar steals heat from its surroundings and life from its victims. This malevolent master of mischief takes glee in terrorizing its prey, and at 4’11”, it is large enough to threaten an adult. If you feel the air get cold around you, a Gengar may be trying to curse you. Gengar can actually cool the area around it by 10 degrees Fahrenheit to make its victims shake. It hides in shadowy corners and can even pretend to be its victim’s shadow. When your shadow starts to move and a face leers out from the darkness, it is too late to save you.

2. Drifloon

If you’ve ever watched or read any version of Stephen King’s It, you may be reminded of Pennywise and his balloons upon reading about Drifloon. Drifloon floats aimlessly around areas where children congregate, waiting for one of them to notice it. Much like Pennywise, it takes a form designed to appeal to children and lures them in. If a child takes the bait and grabs its hand, it drags them away to the afterlife, and the child is never seen again. “You‘ll float too!”, indeed.

*No matter who you are, if you bring strong emotions around this Pokémon, it will silence you violently.*

1. Hattrem

This Pokémon needs its trainer to be quiet and calm, or else it will MAKE them be quiet and calm. The trainer of a Hattrem must walk on eggshells around their Pokémon, not laughing too loud or making too much noise, or feeling too many strong emotions. It can read your mind and it is constantly watching you, so you are never safe, even in your own head. If it decides you are not calm enough, it will violently assault you until you either calm down or die.
