Watch For Fires, Watch Your Back

Fears to Fathom: Ironbark Lookout is the fourth game in this horror series based on true stories. 24-year-old Jack Nelson is transferred to the remote Ironbark State Park to work as a fire lookout. Jack is expecting solitude and peaceful days working in the forest, but his experience turns out to be very different. He’s not alone, and the inhabitants of the forest are anything but peaceful…

Opening

The game starts with you on the road in your RV. You’ll get some texts from your sister Kayla, who tells you about a diner in Roseburg. Since you’re hungry, you’ll stop by there for dinner. Keep driving and eventually you should see it on your right. Park the RV and get out.

Before you go into the building, there’s a guy next to a red car that you can talk to. Apparently, there’s been some disappearances in Ironbark State Park, rumored to be the work of a creature. Talking to this man gives you the Talkative achievement.

A Nice Dinner

Next, enter the diner, and select a song on the jukebox if you’d like. The waitress will approach you and tell you to choose any table you’d like. There’s also a surly guy in a red and blue striped shirt that you can talk to. Once you sit down, put in your order with the waitress. I chose grilled cheese, but anything will do. Before you eat, you’ll need to use the bathroom. Don’t forget to flush and wash your hands!

After you return to your seat, the waitress will bring your food over. Eat your dinner, then give her a 50% tip when she brings you the check for the Generous achievement. Now that you’re full, go back to the RV. The door’s wide open and the bathroom is mysteriously stuck shut, but it’s probably nothing, right? Drive back onto the road and head to your next destination.

Checking In At Gate D

If you’ve read your texts from Mitch, you’ll know that you need to head to Gate D to get your keys. Park your RV in the gravel parking lot on the right, then get out and head towards the building. Make sure to grab your bag before you leave, though.

At the building, open the door for a jumpscare, then talk to Billy, the park ranger here. Tell him who you are, and he’ll give you your keys. Next, he’ll open the gate and give you a flashlight so you can navigate through the woods at night. After Billy is done giving you some warnings, walk through the gate and into the dark woods…

To The Tower

Walk down the trail with your flashlight and your bag, ignoring any footsteps you may hear behind you. Eventually you’ll come to a crossroad with a sign. Take the left path to the tower, we’ll use the right path to Lacey Trail later.

At the tower, flip the generator on, then ascend to the top. Put your bag down inside your room and turn on the light by the door. There are tools on the countertop to the left, as well as a radio and computer straight ahead. Look at the whiteboard to get the computer password: ironbark11.

Your Daily Dose of Screentime

On the computer, there are several things you can do. First, watch the employee training video to get the Top of the Mornin’ achievement. If you watch the YouTuber Jacksepticeye, you’ll recognize him narrating the video. You can also watch videos on the flash drive, look at the trail map, and play Plague.exe, a zombie shooting game. If you get 500 points in Plague.exe, you’ll get the Sharp Shooter achievement.

Once you click on Service Reporting, you’ll receive a call on the radio from Tower 12. Exit the computer and answer the call.

A New Friend

Connor, the lookout at Tower 12, introduces himself and tells you to make a fire to keep yourself warm tonight. There’s no firewood up top, it’s kept in the shed next to the tower. Grab your flashlight and walk downstairs. Take a log from inside the shed. Know that if you lose anything there is spare equipment in here, too.

Bring the log back upstairs and put it into the stove to the left of the door. Pour some gasoline into the stove, then pick up the matches on top of the stove. Open the box, then throw a match onto the logs. Don’t worry if you miss, it won’t burn the place down!

Reporting the Weather

When the fire is lit, Connor will call you back and tell you to make your weather report. There is a thermometer on the wall to the right of the whiteboard. Get the temperature by clicking on it. Next pick up the anemometer shown in the photo above and take it outside to get the windspeed. Tonight, it is clear outside, and you have helped 0 hikers. Type all of this into the Service Report on the computer and hit submit.

Once everything is done for today, click on your bed to go to sleep.

Not Going Down There at This Time of Night!

At 3:26 AM, you wake up to the sound of the radio. Get up and try to interact with it, but nothing will happen. At this time, you’ll also need to pee, but you don’t feel like going down all of those stairs. Walk outside and look off the railing, and you’ll get a prompt to pee off the tower. Once you’re done, return to bed and go back to sleep.

A Lovely Evening?

Sip your coffee and take pictures out on the tower deck during a peaceful moment at sunset. After you’re done, walk back inside the tower, and you’ll get a call from Connor. He tells you there’s someone lighting a fire in the north woods.

Put your mug down and grab your binoculars, then take a look outside. Go back inside and confirm the situation with Connor. He wants you to investigate and quench the fire. It’s time for a little walk in the dark. Take your flashlight and bear spray and descend.

Being A Killjoy

Tonight, you’re going to Lacey Trail, so follow the trail back to the crossroads and take that path. Ignore any screams you may hear, it’s probably just a fox or something. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the campsite. You can check your texts here since you’ve got reception.

Nobody’s home, but the campsite fire is still burning. We need to put it out. No slumber parties allowed out here! Drop your bear spray, pick up the bucket, and get water from the nearby creek. Then pour it over the fire. If you go by the barricade, you will hear whistling and see someone moving in the woods. Now make your way back to the tower.

Mmm, Lasagna!

First, report to Connor about the campfire. After you’re done, it’s time to relax. Kayla sent you a recipe for lasagna that looks pretty good, so that’s what you’ll make for dinner.

Open the fridge and pull out some marinara sauce, diced tomatoes, mozzarella, and pepperoni. Put each ingredient into the pan by the sink. After everything else is in the pan, get the pasta on the other side of the sink and pour it in the pan. Then slide it into the oven.

While your dinner is cooking, Connor will call back, reminding you to do your daily report. Head outside and get the wind speed and weather (it’s cloudy today), then check the temperature inside and input your data.

Once you finish your report and send it, the lasagna will be ready. Take it out and eat half of it on your bed, then put away the other half for dinner tomorrow.

Get Ready for Bed

Now it’s time to go to sleep. Before you do that, there are a couple of important tasks to do tonight. Go downstairs and get more wood from the shed for your stove, it’ll be cold tonight. You will hear more whistling while you’re in the shed but ignore it for now. Once you’re back in the tower, take your gasoline and light the fire with a match.

Now go outside and close all of the shutters for the windows. This is very important tonight and will also be important in the future. When everything is locked down, turn the light off and go to bed.

An Ominous Message

At 2:27 AM, strange noises and lights from outside wake you up. It seems like you have a visitor. Get out of bed and go to the window not covered. There’s a guy in a hooded robe watching you! Let him go and move over to your door. Do not open it, just crouch and watch him through the blinds. He places something down outside your door, and then goes back down the stairs. Wait until he’s gone before you open the door, or he’ll kill you.

The strange, robed man left an animal skull behind, tied to the railing. Talk to Connor about what you saw. While he thinks it’s a prank, it seems like a bad omen. However, there isn’t much you can do about it in the middle of the night. Go back to sleep.

Dude In Distress

The next day, you’re looking out over the forest… with some really dirty binoculars! Scrub them clean. When you’re done, you should see a flare shoot up from the woods. Someone’s in trouble.

Go inside and you should get a radio call from a lost hiker. Get his information. He’s going west, and he recently saw a stream. At this point, you could figure out his location from the map on the computer. I’ll make it easier for you: tell him to go left.

All of the sudden, the hiker hears whistling. He thinks it’s you, but you’re in the tower! Before you can tell him to run, you get a knock at the door, and the radio goes silent.

Open the door to get some supplies from Billy. After this, do your usual nighttime routine, eating, reporting the daily weather, and closing the shutters. After this is done, head downstairs to get some firewood.

A Mysterious Visitor

When you go into the shed, you’re greeted by a visitor named Silas who looks strangely familiar. Isn’t that the grumpy guy from the diner? He says he’s the maintenance guy for the radio tower down the way, but he creeps you out and says some things that could be interpreted as threats.

After he walks off, go back upstairs and make your fire. Then talk to Connor again. He tells you that radio tower has been inactive for years. So Silas is not who he says he was… However, there’s not much you can do, so go to sleep.

Generator Outage

Two nights later, you’ll get a call from Connor about a computer update. In the computer, open the console. Type HELP, then CHKVER, then CHKUPD to find the update package. Next, type update, and put in the package code shown under CHKUPD. Finally, choose the only line that’s unused.

The computer will update, but then, the power goes out. Seems like the generator is out of fuel. Bring the gas tank downstairs and fuel the generator. Then use the portable toilet next door. You may notice that it’s measuring your microphone volume in here. This will become important very soon. After you’re done, go back to bed, and prepare for an adrenaline rush.

I See You, And You See Me

Late at night, you’ll get another call from Connor. Answer it, and he’ll tell you there’s another campsite fire outside. He’s tired, so he wants you to go deal with it. Pick up your binoculars and look to the west, next to the stairs.

You should see what looks like a cult meeting; a bunch of guys in robes are cooking someone over the fire! To get evidence, take a picture of what you see. Oops, the flash was on, and they saw it! Now they’re heading to your location.

Quickly run back into the room and close the door. Lower your volume and hide under the bed. Stay quiet, since your microphone is picking up noise and being too loud will alert the cultist. Eventually the cultist should leave, and the normal game sounds will come back. This is your cue to leave before he comes back.

Toss your binoculars, you won’t need them anymore. As soon as you step outside and walk to the stairs, the cultist will see you and begin chasing you. Sprint down the stairs and quickly hide in the portable toilet, closing the door behind you. Again, stay silent and lower your game volume. In here, you can actually watch what’s happening outside.

He’s Gone… Go, Go, GO!

Once the cultist leaves, bolt out the door and run down the trail. Don’t go down Lacey Trail or the cultists will catch you. Just keep going straight.

The game will fade to black and load you near Billy’s little house. Run forward, and the camera will turn to show a cultist chasing you. Book it straight to your RV, get in, and don’t forget to shut the door behind you! With this, you’ve beaten Fears to Fathom: Ironbark Lookout, and earned the Survivor achievement.
